Return to Home PageAlonso, You have a powerful story. Why don’t you give us some details about you and introduce us to your story. How did you get to where you are today?
During my time studying finance I joined a startup business in the meal delivery industry & initially I was staffed to work on finance and accounting. I was very curious about digital marketing, and I wanted to explore it further with the company. I initially learned as much as I could and also I applied everything I learned about how digital marketing works.
The best decision I made was not staying in the field I went to school for. I helped the meal delivery business go from $10K in monthly revenue to $100K monthly in revenue over a period of one year.
After working with the meal delivery company, I worked and was contracted with several marketing companies including iProspect which is one of the biggest firms in the world. I worked on advertising projects where I managed 6 and 7 figure monthly budgets. I love online marketing and it’s what has driven me to start my own agency. I want to help other entrepreneurs grow their businesses with online marketing and also teach others how online marketing works.
Alonso, I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Personally, I have had many challenges growing up in an underprivileged community. I am a 1st-generation American as my parents come from an impoverished town near Mexico City. On a professional level I have had to learn how to run a business and also choose a profession that I could fall in love with.
Marketing agencies are notorious for overworking their staff. There tend to be too many clients and too little pay. Many marketers, including myself tend to take on a marketing position with a well known company knowing that working with a big brand will lead to better work opportunities in the future. I quit my last job with a marketing firm because there were too many meetings and I had zero control over how to perform the job; which is always to generate results for clients via online marketing. Starting my own business has been a huge challenge. Finding the right types of clients to work with that have realistic expectations and then retaining them has been a key challenge. I have lost clients, also I have taken on clients hoping to help them at minimal fees only to be faced with the reality that when you undervalue yourself as a marketer, there is zero motivation to do a great job, you end up terminating agreements because you find something better. By far the biggest challenge has been finding the right types of people that I can partner with.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What makes you good at what you do?
I love finance and numbers, but I also love creativity. Due to my background in finance the way I see online advertising is similar to day-trading. Advertising is a numbers game. The combination of loving numbers and my curiosity as well as my not being afraid to test new ideas, is what enables me to make me to be an effective business owner and marketer.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
Take a good look in the mirror and be brutally honest. Learn to be honest with yourself. Identify all the problems that hold you back and get to work! When I say work I don’t mean physical work, or attaining any old skill set that makes you money. Often times it’s the internal dialogue, insecurities, and our past traumas that are holding us back.
Speaking of success Alonso, what does the word mean to you?
Living on my own terms. Finding the right client. Don’t undervalue yourself. Work 3 hours a day or 16 hours a day. This is completely up to you. You don’t have to listen to anyone who disagrees with you or wants you to change. You are who you are in this world and the right people will be attracted to your definition of ‘success’
What’s next for you Alonso?
To continue building my marketing agency and find new innovative ways to increase my income, and also the income of others. I would like to build a company where my marketers are paid their worth, and can work from wherever they want. Also a company that treats fellow marketers with the highest respect regardless of their role.
